The Truth about Kony 2012 Video in relation to Uganda

Kony 2012 is an awareness aid not aimed at painting Uganda black but to sensitize for the capture of Joseph Kony. This is made clear by the co producer of Invisible Children Jason Russell when he adds to his film ‘KONY 2012 is a film and campaign by Invisible Children that aims to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice.

He further goes on and says, “If I’d ask you, who is Joseph Kony, you wouldn’t know. You should. And that’s why I’m going to tell you about him.”

Fine, Some Ugandans are happy that such a campaign is going on and this will increase chances for Kony’s arrest. However we would have been happier if the produce had done a bit more research and reported the right information to avoid misinforming his audience.

Firstly, the film falls short of giving the right geographical sense of where Uganda is. In the film, the narrator claims that Uganda is located in Central Africa. This is a very awful precedent that does not help a case for Uganda. Mindful of the fact that many people in Europe and America do not even know where Uganda is, the producer of the film should have considered and addressed this fact by providing the actual facts about Uganda. Uganda is found in East Africa and never has it ever been part of Central Africa.

Another thing that Jason did not tell the world was that, Uganda is at peace and not a war zone, and that Joseph Kony was defeated by the Uganda People’s Defence Force in mid 2006. Six year back, Kony ran to the Central African Bushes and the Uganda Peoples Defence Force together with the Uganda Government took it upon them to help the people of Central Africa to fight him.

Another fact is that even when Kony was still fighting in Northern Uganda, all other parts of the country where safe and all businesses carried on as the Government and other International bodies tried to restore peace in Northern Uganda.

We therefore urge the friends of Uganda to continue visiting our Beautiful country and appreciating nature as Kony gets sorted out in neighboring Central Africa.

Baby Gorilla named Rotary

Members of the Rotary Club of Uganda visited the Impenetrable Bwindi forest for the famous Gorilla tracking. The Rotarians tracked the Nshongi family which is the newest and biggest gorilla family in Bwindi. Shidah an adult female and mother seemed to have picked a lot of interest in the visiting Rotarians. She and her baby remained very attentive and observant through out the viewing period. She seemed to have appreciated the work done by Rotarians. As the Rotarians turned their backs to the family after 1 hr viewing time, Shidah and her baby realized they had not joined and followed the rotarians in request for membership. Without protest from the Rotarians Shidah & baby got permanent membership to the Rotary clubs of Uganda and agreed to be their ambassador to help coordinate the Rotarians understanding of the complexity of jungle life.

To make the relationship even stronger, the Rotarians requested Shidah to allow her baby be named “Rotary” and this was granted. After this business, Shidah sat down looked at Rotarians three times as if sayings see you again and turned to go back and join the other members of her group.

Uganda’s Tourism Industry Caught up By the Recession.

By Adrian Ssali  for the gorilla safari company
The economic clunk is gradually catching up with Uganda’s and the entire East Africa’s Tourism industry. Deteriorating figures of tourists, few inquiries on national parks and immense cancellations of reservations and gorilla permits have become the order of the day in the tourism industry.

It’s observed that “If things continue in the same direction over 30 per cent of the tour companies are likely to close business and hundreds of Ugandans are likely to become jobless,” reported by the dairy Monitor.

Uganda and many other developing countries depending on the tourism industry can not survive the effects of this economic depression because a big percentage of their clientele is based in Europe and the US. Unfortunately these are the region’s worst hit by the recession. Now, many Ugandan investors in the industry are worried they could be headed for closures.

Some tour companies have derived surviving measures like offensive marketing in all the places they go. Some have opened offices in various countries and others have decided to venture in more than one business so that they can survive inter dependently.

There is hope that the US President’s Barrack Obama’s rescue budget of $800 billion will change the situation. However, if the situation remains the same Uganda is most likely to lose out on the revenue contribution from the tourism industry.
